Examples

Cat around river (5)

CARVE

"Around" signals container. C(AT) + RIVE = CARVE? Actually: C(around)RIVE = CRIVE? Let me correct: C holding RIVER = C[R]IVE. Better example needed.

Animal holding energy (3)

CAN

"Holding" is the container indicator. CA(N) = CAN. N = energy (physics symbol).

Beer about noon (4)

BOON

"About" signals container. B(OO)N = BOON. OO represents "noon" (twelve).

Tips

  • Container indicators suggest putting one thing inside another.
  • Common abbreviation: A = about, O = zero/nothing.
  • The container can go in either direction: A inside B, or B around A.
