A container clue places one word (or letter) inside another word. The result forms the answer.

Examples
“Cat around river (5)”
CARVE
"Around" signals container. CAR(V)E — C + ARE with V (river) inserted = CARVE.
“Animal holding energy (3)”
CAN
"Holding" is the container indicator. CA(N) = CAN. N = energy (physics symbol).
“Beer about noon (4)”
BOON
"About" signals container. B(OO)N = BOON. OO represents "noon" (twelve).
