Cryptic Definition Clues in Cryptic Crosswords
A cryptic definition uses a tricky, punning definition where the whole clue works as the definition on two levels.
Examples
“Flower holder? (5)”
RIVER
"Flower" = something that flows (a river). "Holder" = something that holds (water). The whole clue is a cryptic definition.
“Time of rest? (4)”
WEST
WEST = time (of day) + rest (remaining). The question mark signals a cryptic definition.
“Stolen vehicle? (3)”
CAR
A stolen vehicle is just... a car. The trick is that "stolen" is misleading on the surface.
Tips
