Double Definition Clues in Cryptic Crosswords
A double definition clue gives two separate definitions of the same word. These are usually short, clean clues.
Examples
“Dessert wine (4)”
PORT
PORT = a dessert wine, and PORT = a harbour (but here both definitions lead to PORT).
“Fastener fast (5)”
QUICK
Wait — better: "Flower river (5)" = RIVER (a flower = something that flows, and river = a river).
“Match striker (5)”
LIGHT
LIGHT = a match (to light), and LIGHT = a striker (someone who lights).
Tips
- →Usually no indicator — both halves are definitions.
- →The clue is often very short (2-4 words).
- →One definition is often straightforward, the other more obscure.
